Ethiopia noted its readiness to work on the speedy implementation of\u00a0the Paris Climate Agreement (COP 21) entered into force in November\u00a02016.<\/p>\n

The country has dedicated particular emphasis on mitigation\u00a0adaptation, climate financing, capacity building and transfer of
\ntechnology.\u00a0It was noted, as Ethiopia is among the most vulnerable countries to\u00a0the negative consequences of climate change, it is playing a big role\u00a0in Climate Vulnerable Forum which aims to increase the presence and\u00a0visibility of member states at international, regional and domestic\u00a0levels.<\/p>\n

It was also made clear that Ethiopia strongly advocates the importance\u00a0of taking urgent actions to address the negative effects of climate\u00a0change.\u00a0On the occasion, two new initiatives that would see a “unified Africa”\u00a0diversify its sources of funding to confront climate change and reduce\u00a0greenhouse gas emissions were adopted.<\/p>\n

Tabled by the outgoing Coordinator of CAHOSCC, President Abdelfetah El\u00a0Sisi, the adoption of the initiatives was praised as a big step in\u00a0creating ownership under the African Union framework.\u00a0The two initiatives are African Adaptation Initiative (AAI) and\u00a0African Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI).<\/p>\n

Given Climate Change is one of the greatest challenges facing the\u00a0world, with Africa already experiencing some of the most severe\u00a0impacts, the continent’s leaders have proactively responded with the\u00a0establishment of the Committee of Africa Heads of State and Government\u00a0on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) to influence global negotiations.<\/p>\n
