On 3 January, the Ethiopian People\u2019s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) issued a joint press conference on current national and regional issues.\u00a0In order to build national consensus, foster national reconciliation and widen the democratic platform, a decision has been made to drop charges and pardon\u00a0imprisoned\u00a0politicians and\u00a0individuals, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said at the event.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>A decision has also been made for the closure of a <\/span>centre commonly known as Maekelawi which the Derg regime had been using to\u00a0torture\u00a0people under the guise of <\/span>investigation.\u00a0<\/span>The centre will be turned into a modern museum.<\/span><\/p>\n

PM Hailemariam’s announcement came after marathon meetings with the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front coalition.<\/p>\n

This groundbreaking move\u00a0marks a further step towards a deepened democracy in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

The announcement was hailed by\u00a0human rights groups\u00a0as an amnesty for the country\u2019s political prisoners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
