Ethiopian Embassy in Brussels Expresses its condolences to Tanzanian people and Government on the death of former president Benjamin Mkapa

Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Gebremichael Gebretsadik signed today a book of condolences at the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in Brussels which was opened upon the death of Benjamin William Mkapa, the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania who passed away on Friday July 24, 2020. Mr. Gebremichael expressed his deepest sympathy and condolences to Tanzanian people and Government on the death of former president Benjamin Mkapa.

PM Abiy Convenes Investment And Job Creation National Committee

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has convened the Investment and Jobs Creation National Committee to evaluate the national jobs creation activities taken over the past year and to set a direction for the year ahead.

The committee is chaired by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was launched last year comprising the Deputy Prime Minister, Presidents of regional states, the Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa Mayors and two representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister.

The National Committee reported that out of the national target of creating 3 million jobs in one year, 3,387,079 jobs have been created nationwide in agriculture, industry and services sector.

Although 330,000 jobs have been impacted by COVID-19, the losses reported have not been as significant as had been expected.

Key contributors for the milestone achieved including enhanced private sector participation, large scale government projects, focus on enterprise development and sectoral financing support, according to Prime Minister Office.

The 2020/2021 budget year is set at creating another 3 Million jobs distributed nationally and maximizing on successes gained thus far.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that Ethiopia’s journey to prosperity need not be interrupted by intermittent incidents and that staying the course is key while keeping track of progress.

In setting a direction, he urged regions to put all their efforts and focus on ensuring peace and security not only through strengthening the security sector but also by facilitating community stakeholders to be guardians of peace.

The premier also called upon regional governments to prioritize building strong mindsets and attitude of youth by diverting energy to volunteerism and making volunteerism a prerequisite to hiring.

He also called for enhancing automation, coordination, and alignment among private and public sector initiatives and strengthening the financial sector to support youth, farmers, and other categories making a living on small earnings across the nation.

H.E Ambassador Hirut meets with GERD Support Group coordinators

The newly appointed Ambassador Hirut Zemene, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the FDRE to Belgium, Luxembourg and EU institutions, met with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Support Group coordinators in Belgium on Saturday, July 25/2020 at the Embassy premises.

H.E Ambassador Hirut appreciated the role being played by the Group in creating understanding about the issues of the tripartite process on the first filling and annual operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam .

Following Ambassador Hirut’s briefings on current circumstances regarding the GERD talks, the coordinators reiterated their readiness to continue supporting in creating awareness about the next stage of Ethiopia’s position in the negotiation.

The support group aims at contributing it’s part to inform members of the international community about the objective of the Renaissance Dam, the benefits it has both to Ethiopia and the region and Ethiopia’s efforts to reach in to a win – win solution on the trilateral negotiation processes between Ethiopia, Egypt and the Sudan.

Addis Ababa Unveils COVID-19 Prevention Project Benefits Over 1.2M People

The city Administration of Addis Ababa has introduced a new COVID 19 prevention project that aims to protect more than 1. 2 million people in the capital from the pandemic.

The project that will run for the next six months under the theme “Our Health Is in Our Hands” has been jointly initiated by Dalberg Group and a team of Charity Organizations and public and private institutions, according to the Press Secretariat of Mayor Office.

Deputy Mayor and Public Service Delivery Cluster Coordinator of Addis Ababa, Engineer Endawok Abitie, and Director of Roha Africa, Wolela Hailesselassie have launched the project today (July 23rd).

The project that centers residential quarters is said accessible to 1.2 Million residents who will receive sanitation and hygienic supplies based on family sizes.

The project also aims to undertake awareness creation activities among the community on ways of combating the pandemic, it is learned.

Ministers Praise Successful Completion of First Year Filling of GERD

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedu Andargachew expressed a congratulatory message on the successful completion of first year filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Sileshi Bekele also congratulated all Ethiopians on the thriving completion of first-year filling of the dam with 4.9 billion cubic meters of water.

The leaders’ discussion last night was remarkable and smooth. They settled to resolve the technical and legal issues that have not yet reached an agreement through continuous discussions.

Accordingly, the leaders decided the issue of all levels of water filling to fully agreed in a short period of time and a lasting and comprehensive agreement should be reached to conclude future negotiations, including future water use, he underlined.

PM Congratulates Ethiopians On Completion Of GERD First Year Filling

Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed has congratulated Ethiopians on the occasion of the completion of the first year filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

In his message, the Prime Minister said “I would like to congratulate all Ethiopians for taking our dam to this level through our joint efforts.”

“On this day, we Ethiopians knew how to execute and achieve nationally focused projects,” he said, adding “the completion of the first year filling of the dam is a historic day for Ethiopians.”

The Prime Minister added he thinks the world will surely understand that the dam is a turning point to Ethiopia’s move to stand on its own two feet and beat poverty.

“We conducted the filling of the dam without causing harm to anyone,” he said and added, “the dam will benefit the lower riparian countries rather than causing harm to them.”

The Prime Minister reiterated that Ethiopia has no intention of harming Sudan and Egypt during the construction and operation of the dam.

He finally extended his gratitude to those who raised funds, participated in negotiations, and to the former Ethiopian Prime Ministers, for their contribution to the success of the dam.

Nation Earns over 854 Mln USD from Coffee Export

Ethiopia has earned 854.21 million USD from coffee export trade during the past Ethiopian budget year that ended on July 8, 2020.

The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority told ENA that the revenue was obtained from the 271 tons of coffee exported in the stated period which is also more than 93 percent of the plan.

The revenue has increased by 17.36 percent compared to the previous budget year, the Authority stated.

Supports provided by high-level government officials and professionals in the sector as well as credit schemes made available to coffee farmers, growers and cooperative unions have contributed to the increase of the revenue, he added.

Germany, Saudi Arabia, United States, Japan, Belgium, South Korea, Italy, France, and Sudan are the major importers of Ethiopia’s coffee.

Every Citizen To Become Beneficiary Of Social Health Security Scheme In 10 Years

Ministry of Health has announced a plan to enable every citizen to benefit from the social health security scheme in the coming 10 years.

The Ministry held discussions with stakeholders on its 10-year master plan.

While presenting the 10-year master, the Health Minister, Dr. Lia Tadesse it demands a great deal of effort to address the growing demand of the community in the health sector.

“The imbalance in the health infrastructure, service inequality, and prevalence of non-communicable diseases continue to be a bottleneck to the sector,” Dr. Lia said adding “the master plan is crucial to address such issues.”

The master plan aims to increase the life expectancy of citizens from 65 to 70 years and reduce infant mortality ratio from 30 to 12 and reduce death rates from non-communicable diseases.

She said the government aspires to realize full coverage of social health insurance in the country in 10 years as of the current budget year.

Dr. Lia also added efforts will be undertaken to increase the existing coverage of the community-based health insurance coverage from 49 to 100 pct in 10 years.
