Ambassador Eshete Tilahun met with Ms. Pernilla Sjölin, Chief of Protocol Director at the European Commission, to discuss on major bilateral issues and the status of presenting his credentials to the President of the European Commission.
Both officials underscored the importance of strengthening strategic ties and enhancing cooperation between Ethiopia and the European Union. They explored avenues for closer collaboration in areas of mutual interests including global and regional issues. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the EU, while Ms. Sjölin also reaffirmed the new Commission’s projection to foster constructive engagements.
Ms. Sjölin outlined the protocol requirements and ceremonial aspects of the credential presentation and highlighted the significance of this diplomatic tradition in reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to its relationship with the EU.
Ambassador Eshete Tilahun conveyed his gratitude for the guidance and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for Ethiopia and EU mutual interests within the European Union Institutions.

The 129th Adwa Victory Day celebrated in the Embassy with the Ethiopian Diaspora in the BENELUX
The Embassy of Ethiopia in Brussels marked the 129th anniversary of Adwa Victory Day under the theme “Adwa: Black People’s Victory.” The event brought together Ethiopian diplomats, members of the Ethiopian diaspora in Benelux, and friends of Ethiopia to commemorate this historic triumph.
At the opening of the celebration, H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun highlighted the historical significance of Adwa as a symbol of African resilience and the struggle for freedom, dignitary and sovereignty. He emphasized that Ethiopia’s sovereignty and national honor remain non-negotiable, urging the younger generation to uphold the legacy of Adwa by supporting national flagship projects like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Members of Ethiopian Diasporas in attendance reflected on how the victory of Adwa has reshaped global perceptions of equality, the essence of independence war and resistance. They also stressed the importance of preserving the hard-won freedom and honoring the sacrifices of their ancestors. They called on the young to pass the torch of the Adwa victory to the future generations. The need to combat poverty and champion Ethiopia’s development as a model for Africa is also underlined.
The ceremony began with the singing of Ethiopia’s national anthem, followed by a presentation on the historical significance of the Adwa victory. The discussion held thereafter demonstrated the bravery, unity, and sacrifice that led to Ethiopia’s Victory. A poem commemorating the occasion was performed by two female diaspora members, while veteran community members shared insights on Adwa’s lasting impact on Black liberation movements worldwide. Celebrants shared views stating that the spirit of Adwa has defined the just and unjust relations of the human race.
The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, followed by traditional Ethiopian food and coffee. The jubilating celebration reaffirmed Adwa’s legacy as a victory for all Black people and a source of national pride for Ethiopians in the world.

በዓሉ የአገራችን ብሔራዊ መዝሙር በመዘመር የተጀመረ ሲሆን፣ ስለታላቁ የአድዋ ድል የሚያትት መነሻ ጽሁፍ ለበዓሉ ታዳሚዎች ቀርቦ ውይይት ተደርጎበታል። በመነሻ ጽሑፉ የዓድዋ ድል የአያቶችን የዓላማ ፅናት እና አትንኩኝ ባይነት የታየበት፣ የውስጥ ልዩነቶችን በመቀነስ የውጭ ጠላትን በጋራ ድል በማድረግ መስዋእትነት የተከፈለበት እንደሆን ተገልጿል። በጀግንነትና በብዙ መስዋዕትነት የተገኘ የጋራ ድል መሆኑ ተወስቷል። ድሉን የሚዘክር ግጥምና ሽለላ በሁለት ሴት የዳያስፖራ አባላት ቀርቧል። ሁለት አንጋፋ የዳያስፖራ አባላት ደግሞ አድዋ ከነተጽእኖ አድራሽነቱ መከበር ያለበት የጥቁር ህዝቦች ድል እንደሆነ አስረድተዋል።
በመቀጠል ለበዓሉ የተዘጋጀውን ኬክ በመቁረስ ፣ የባህላዊ ምግቦች እና የቡና መስተንግዶ ተከናውኖ በዓሉ በቤኔሉክስ ከሚኖሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን፣ ትውልደ ኢትዮጵያውያን እና የኢትዮጵያ ወዳጆች ጋር በተጀመረበት ሁኔታ በድምቀት ተጠናቅቋል።

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun, accompanied by his delegation held a courtesy meeting with Mr. Andrew McDowell, Director General of the European Investment Bank (EIB) – Global and his team on 27 February 2025.
After brief introduction during the meeting Mr. McDowell and his team have provided an overview of the EIB’s operations, highlighting the strategic presence of the bank in Ethiopia’s key sectors. The priority sectors being finance, energy, infrastructure, water and agriculture. They elaborated on the ongoing and upcoming projects, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to support and work with Ethiopia. Particular attention drawn to the economic development through sustainable investments and financing partnerships.
Ambassador Eshete on his part expressed his appreciation for the bank’s long-lasting collaboration with Ethiopia and the role of EIB in financing development initiatives and specific project. He provided insights into Ethiopia’s priority sectors as major drivers of growth and development of the country. He also outlined key areas where further cooperation could be strengthened. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of sustained financial support and technical assistance to drive Ethiopia’s economic development. In the context of the country’s ongoing reform, EU’s Global Gateway, the depth investment and business opportunities for entrepreneurs from European countries and Ethiopia are explored. The officials agreed to consult and exchange information regularly.

Ambassador Eshete Tilahun, along with his Delegation, held a meeting with Ms. Valérie Heyman, the Deputy Director for Political Affairs and Africa Director at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Also in attendance was H.E. Mrs. Jeanne Crauser, the Ambassador of Luxembourg to Ethiopia.
At the meeting, Ambassador Eshete expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and acknowledged the importance of the ongoing capacity-building cooperation in the financial sector. He then outlined his key priorities, emphasizing the need to strengthen existing collaborations while exploring new avenues of partnership between Ethiopian and Luxembourg institutions.
Ms. Heyman affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation. Both sides highlighted the importance of working closely to identify and implement new opportunities for engagement across various sectors. Prior to the meeting Ambassador Eshete briefly met with Ms. Véronique Dockendorf, the Director for Political affairs at the Ministry.

H.E. Eshete Tilahun presented his credentials to His Royal Highness Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg at the Grand Ducal Court.

During the meeting, Ambassador Eshete expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and cooperation between Ethiopia and Luxembourg. He also highlighted the key priorities of his tenure which include further strengthening the capacity building cooperation in the financial sector, enhancing people-to-people ties and promoting trade, investment and tourism between the two countries.

His Royal Highness Prince Guillaume on his part assured Luxembourg’s commitment to further enhancing bilateral cooperation and assured the Ambassador of the Government of Luxembourg’s full support in advancing mutually beneficial collaboration.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his delegation held a visit to Mogadishu, Somalia, earlier today. The two leaders held extensive discussions, building on previous engagements to strengthen bilateral relations. Their talks focused on peace and security, the economy, diplomacy, and opportunities for joint infrastructure development.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized the region’s immense potential for cooperation and mutual benefit, stating:
“The Horn of Africa is rich in resources—fertile lands, fresh water, and human capital. Yet, as a region, we struggle to feed ourselves. This makes integration essential to achieving our shared aspirations.”
The Prime Minister and his delegation have concluded their visit and returned to Ethiopia.

H.E. Eshete Tilahun presented his copy of credentials accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, to H.E. Ambassador Oliver Baldauff, the Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
During the meeting, Ambassador Eshete expressed his readiness to work closely with the Ministry to further strengthen relations and existing cooperation between Ethiopia and Luxembourg. He also outlined the key priorities of his tenure.
Emphasizing the commitment to fostering strong and friendly ties between Ethiopia and Luxembourg, Ambassador Baldauff on his part, welcomed him and assured Him of the Ministry’s support for his success.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun, along with staff of the Embassy of Ethiopia in Brussels, visited the Africa Museum on 25 February 2025 as part of efforts to enhance cultural and scientific collaboration.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in discussions with Mr. Bart Ouvry, Managing Director of the Africa Museum Tervuren and his team. The Managing Director provided briefing on the Museum’s extensive work, including its exhibitions, historical research, and the work of its scientific research center. He also elaborated on potential areas of cooperation between the Museum and Ethiopian institutions.
Ambassador Eshete expressed gratitude for the invitation and warm hospitality extended to the Embassy staff. The Ambassador highlighted key areas where the Ethiopian Embassy and the Museum could collaborate in the future, emphasizing preservation efforts. He further expressed Embassy’s desire to establish research partnerships, knowledge sharing and exchanges including demonstration of cultural artifacts.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to fostering closer ties through joint initiatives that promote African heritage and scientific exploration. In that regard to hold technical consultation.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete held the courtesy visit and discussed with Honourable Professor Philippe Gautier, Registrar of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at latter’s office on 20 February 2025 .

During the meeting Ambassador Eshete explained Ethiopia’s role and commitment to multilateralism and noted the current challenges facing multilateral organizations. He also underlined the importance of improving national implementation capacity of Member States with regard to international covenants and resolutions.
In this connection Ambassador Eshete requested the Court to provide higher level capacity building for Ethiopian judges, lawyers, and the judicial system.
Professor Gautier on his part provided an overview of the work of the Court and stressed the crucial role of the States Parties in the functioning of the Court. He further explained about the ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme, which enables young lawyers to gain professional experience by working for the International Court of Justice and forwarded a call for able Ethiopian young lawyers to apply for the Judicial Fellowship Programme.
It was underlined that closer cooperation and relation provides opportunities for further collaboration for the justice system standers setting. Participation in the upcoming annual briefing on the activities of the ICJ were also highlighted.
