በሥነ-ስርዓቱ ክቡር አምባሳደር እሸቴ ከሁለቱም የህብረቱ ፕሬዚዳንቶች ጋር አጭር ውይይት አድርገዋል። ኢትዮጵያ እና የአውሮፓ ህብረት ወደ ስትራቴጂካዊ አጋርነት ትብብር ያደገ ከግማሽ ምዕተ አመት በላይ ያስቆጠረ ረጅም ግንኙነት አላቸው።

H.E. Eshete Tilahun Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the BENELUX countries and the institutions of the European Union, presented his letters of credentials to H.E. Mr. António Costa, President of the European Council, and H.E. Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission today 20 May 2025.
At this occasion, Ambassador Eshete held brief exchanges with both Presidents.
Ethiopia and the European Union enjoy a longstanding relationship spanning over half a century, marked by close cooperation that has progressively advanced into Towards Strategic Partnership.

Ethiopian delegation led by H.E Hirut Zemene, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the AU took part at the Senior Officials preparatory meeting for the 3rd EU-AU Ministerial Meetings in Brussels on 20 May 2025. H.E Hirut Zemene highlighted the importance of the AU-EU partnership and underscored the need to have a strong stocktaking framework to appreciate progresses made so far and common issues consideration ahead. Foreign Affairs Ministers of the African Union and European Union including H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos will meet on the 21st May to review progress made since the sixth EU-AU Summit of February 2022. The Ministers will exchange views on the EU-AU partnership and how to further strengthen cooperation in the landmark year marking the 25th anniversary of the partnership. The Senior official meeting will be followed by a joint Ministerial session that will discuss on range of topics such as peace and security, multilateralism, prosperity, and migration and mobility.

Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos arrived in Brussels today for the 3rd AU- EU Ministerial meeting and met with Mr. Jozef Síkela, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships.
Dr. Gedion appreciated the longstanding partnership between Ethiopia and the European Union (EU) during the last five decades. He emphasized the shared commitment to advancing peace, stability, and development for mutual benefits.
The Minister underscored the importance of further strengthening the partnership between Ethiopia and the European Union. He also stressed the need to implement commitments under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Engagement Agreement signed between Ethiopia and the European Union.
The Minister also highlighted Ethiopia’s efforts to ensure attractive business climate. He also noted the establishment of Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) as Ethiopia’s sovereign investment arm, playing a strategic role in the promotion of FDI.
H.E. Commissioner Síkela on his part in turn, expressed his views on Ethiopia’s immense potential for investment and business opportunities. He underlined Ethiopia’s key role in maintaining peace and security in the region. He also, emphasized the European Union’s commitment to cooperating with Ethiopia further on the basis of equal mutually beneficial partnership and expressed desire to strengthen collaborations.
The two officials discussed as well on regional peace and economic development with affirmation of their readiness to collaborate.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, held discussions with Mr. Younous OMARJEE, Vice-President of the European Parliament, at his office.
Gedion said the visit would contribute to further strengthening the relationship between Ethiopia and the European Union, emphasizing that the EU has been a longstanding development partner of Ethiopia.
The Minister undescored that the two sides share common interests in a range of areas, adding that Ethiopia is working to strengthen regional economic integration, with its policy direction focused on deepening regional ties.
Vice-President Younous OMARJEE, on his part, acknowledged the longstanding nature of the relationship and affirmed that Ethiopia remains a key partner for the European Union.
The Vice-President further stressed Ethiopia’s significant role in the maintenance of regional peace and security and expressed the EU’s commitment to working with Ethiopia to support continued peace and security through strengthened cooperation.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun and the Embassy’s Business Diplomacy team discussed with Mr. Masoud Emami, Representative of Arecify Company, about the investment opportunities in the organic fertilizer and Agro processing sectors in Ethiopia.
Arecify specializes in the production of organic fertilizers, regenerating soil, and Dates (تمر) Processing. The company is interested to invest in Ethiopia and will take part in the upcoming Economic Mission to Ethiopia scheduled to take place from June 1 to 4, 2025.

H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General of the United Nations and President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute, hosted a roundtable meeting on 8 May, 2025 marking of the 10th anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement and the launching of GGGI.
The Former Secretary-General emphasized the need for stronger global collaboration to address the adverse effects of climate change. He also highlighted the progress made and the way forward in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amid today’s evolving global challenges.
In his intervention, Ambassador Eshete shared Ethiopia’s experience in climate-smart agriculture, afforestation and reforestation efforts. He noted that although many pledges have been made, most remain unfulfilled. He stressed the importance of key priorities, including strengthening global cooperation, ensuring national-level commitment, and establishing accountability mechanisms.
He also emphasized that green job creation should prioritize women and girls in Africa and advocate to support renewable energy projects must be encouraged.
The roundtable provided opportunity for GGGI’s partners and beneficiaries countries to share their experiences in green growth, climate financing, and carbon trading.

H.E. Ambassador Willem van de Voorde conveyed Belgium’s enthusiasm for the African Climate Summit scheduled to be held in Ethiopia, September 2025. The Special Envoy also highlighted the dedication of his country to advocate on issues of climate and environmental concerns. Noting that participation in the summit aligns with the global call and the commitment of Ethiopia and Belgium. Belgium aims to be a key partner in driving systemic change, utilizing its climate expertise in policy discussions. The Special Envoy also explained Belgium’s candidacy to host the secretariat of the BBNJ Treaty.
Ambassador Eshete on his part warmly welcomed the Envoy and underlined the importance of working together on the preparation of the African Climate Summit. He emphasized the need for global collaboration on climate and environmental issues. He also noted Ethiopia’s commitment to a green economy through significant investment in renewable energy and the flagship Green Legacy Initiative. Expressing appreciation for Belgium’s potential support, he agreed to exchange views on the work ahead.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun and the Embassy Desk Officer have participated in the meeting that deliberated on the Netherland Africa Strategy, which outlines a ten-year vision for the period of 2023-2032 to enhance mutual interests between African states, promoting trade and economic cooperation, with the Netherlands. The key priorities of the star are highlighted as trade and economic partnerships, ensuring stability and security, and addressing challeges related to irregular migration.

At the opening of the meeting H.E. Mrs. Reinette Klever, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of the Netherlands expressed commitments of the Government of the Netherlands to strengthen its partnership with African states interms of working together for mutual benefits. Her Excellency underscored that the Strategy’s focus areas are food security, water management and health. The Minister further highlighted the implementation of the strategy emphasize an approach of that is transformational.

Ambassador Eshete stated the close cooperation between Ethiopia and the Netherlands, also indicating the importance of general objectives and the resources requirements during implementation phases of the strategy. He noted how the strategy would interface with the EU Global Getaway Initiatives, the unintended impacts of European Deforestation Free Regulation on Africa’s foreign trade. He also expressed disappointment and the negative impacts of the unreasonable visa restriction measures. The African Ambassadors accredited to the Netherlands have participated in the meeting and underlined their countries commitment for successful win-win cooperation. Representatives of the government of The Netherlands provided clarifications questions and comments raised by African Ambassadors.

Mr. Kerkhof presented Vandewiele’s interest to work and invest in Ethiopia. He expressed wishes to partner with local businesses from the textile sector. The focus area of their investment includes Carpets, Furnishings, Blankets and Towels production.Ambassador Eshete and the Business Diplomacy team of the Embassy briefed Mr. Kerckhof about the opportunities in the textile Sector of Ethiopia and encouraged him to deploy efforts for profitable investment.VANDEWIELE NV is one of the Companies confirmed to take part in the upcoming Economic Mission to Ethiopia organized by CBL-ACP and the Embassy of Ethiopia in Brussels, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Addis Ababa, from 1-4 June 2025.
