State Minister of Finance of Ethiopia meets with Director for Africa at DG for International Partnerships of the European Commission and Director for Africa at European External Action Service

H.E. Ms. Semereta Sewasew, State Minister of Finance of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), met with Ms. Sandra KRAMER, Director for Africa at Directorate General for International Partnerships of the European Commission and Ms. Rita LARANJINHA, Director for Africa at European External Action Service and held fruitful discussions on 10th of May 2022, in Brussels.

The State Minister briefed the Directors about overall developments in Ethiopia, including the situation in Northern Ethiopia. She explained about the measures taken by the Government of Ethiopia to improve the provision of humanitarian assistance, the declaration of an indefinite humanitarian truce and end active hostilities, investigations of human rights violations, the national dialogue process and post-conflict Reconstruction and Recovery plan.
The State Minister also elaborated about the multiple challenges the country is facing due to the impacts of COVID pandemic, severe droughts and the global food and fertilizer price increase and expressed GoE’s readiness to work together with development partners, particularly with the EU, to address these compounding challenges.

During the discussions, the EU side recognised the steps being taken and the positive developments to registered. They also called to further strengthening the efforts towards allowing more access to expedite the provision of humanitarian assistance and independent investigation of human rights violations .

H.E. state minister Semereta’s visit was quite timely for the overall exchange of views and understanding on the current situation in Ethiopia and particularly on Ethiopia-EU development cooperation.
