The Reppie waste-to-energy project in Addis Ababa, Africa’s first waste to energy facility of its kind, is ready for operation. The plant will be ready for power generation in September. It will process around 350,000 tonnes of waste annually.
The Reppie facility commenced full construction in Addis Ababa in September 2014 and will be completed in September 2017. The facility will produce 185GWH of electricity annually that will be exported to the Ethiopian national grid. The operational facility, located alongside the 50-year old Koshe dumpsite, is expected to power as many as 25% of the Ethiopian capital’s households.
To supply the feedstock of the facility, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEP) is currently working in collaboration with the Addis Ababa’s City Government to ensure waste collection streamlining.
Ethiopia has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, with GDP growth averaging 10.9% between 2004 and 2016. This rise in income is creating a parallel increase in waste generation and urbanisation.
The waste-to-energy project is among various energy projects being implemented in line with Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy that aims to limit its carbon footprint to less than 2010 levels by 2030 as it becomes a middle-income nation.
