Foreign affairs ministers of the European Union and the African Union met on 21 May 2025 for the third time to take stock of progress made since the sixth EU-AU Summit of February 2022.
Ministers exchanged views on the EU-AU partnership and how to further strengthen cooperation in this landmark year marking the 25th anniversary of their enduring and unique partnership.
H.E. Dr. Gedion Timotheos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia delivered remarks at the Ministerial debate on the thematic issue concerning Prosperity.
He underlined the need for scaling up investment under the Global Gateway Initiative and stressed the necessity to achieve tangible results beyond declarations.
The Minister highlighted AU’s Agenda 2063 and projects like the AfCFTA, CAADP, PIDA, Clean and Renewable Energy Investment remain important. Sustainable agri-food systems to ensure sovereignty and national security were also highlighted in the staments of the Minister.
Dr. Gedion urged alignment of the EU regulations like the EUDR with Africa’s trade frameworks particularly the Everything But Arms. He mentioned the significance of protecting smallholder farmers from unintended burdens of new regulations and abruptly introduced regulations.
Dr. Gedion also emphasized how the Africa-EU collaboration in Artificial Intelligence Digitalization, and innovation leverage prosperity. He called for joint investment for shared prosperity, and Ethiopia’s readiness for business.

Today, 23 May 2025, H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun discussed with Mr. Pascal WALRAVE, Chief Operating Officer of Flanders Investment, about ways of strengthening economic collaboration between Ethiopia and the Flanders Region of the Kingdom of Belgium.
Ambassador Eshete briefed Mr. Walrave about the wider business opportunities in Ethiopia, and the need to stream out particular investment and trade areas has been emphasized by the Belgian side.
The two sides agreed to work together to facilitate opportunities for business ties between Ethiopian and Flanders investors to work on mutually beneficial ventures.
FIT plays a central role in the internationalization of the economy of the Flanders region of Belgium.

H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, held discussion and signed MoU with H.E. Mr. Gordan Radman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia on the side line of the Third AU-EU Ministerial Meeting.
The Ministers underscored the need to further strengthening the partnership of the two countries in the areas of trade, investment, agriculture, tourism digitization and energy developments.
The Miinisters highlighted the need for stronger diplomatic representatiom and regular dialogues on the basis of the signed Memorandum of Understanding that establishes political consultation at deferent levels. The MoU serves as a milestone to further strengthen the relationship between Ethiopia and Croatia.

Brussels, 21 May 2025, On the margins of the Third European Union–African Union Ministerial Meeting, H.E. Dr. Gedion Timotheos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia and H.E. Juraj Blanár, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, engaged in a high-level discussion centered at strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation on regional as well ad global issues.
The two officials exchanged views on areas of mutual interest, including political cooperation, economic development and regional security.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration through existing bilateral and multilateral platforms.

H.E Dr. Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia held discussions with EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner. The discussion was held on the side lines of the Third AU-EU Joint Ministerial Meeting 21 May 2025.
Their discussion focused on common concern regarding migration and cooperation pertaining to sustainability of the process.
During the meeting, Mr. Brunner acknowledged the significant efforts in the process of handling EU concerns on the illegal migration, returns and readmission. He also emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and promised to reflect the credible work.

Minister Maxime Prévot acknowledges Ethiopia’s key role in the Horn of Africa as well as Africa .
The Deputy Prime Minister underlined the historical ties and how Belgium attaches great importance of celebrating longstanding diplomatic relations. Minister Gedion on his part stated the need to use the opportunity to strengthen the relations of Ethiopia and Belgium. The Ministers stated the values of identifying strategic trade and investment opportunities.
Dr. Gedion particularly highlighted the anniversary is a milestone for the cooperation of the two countries and celebrating the event of 120 years friendship is very meaningful and memorable.
Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot, on his part, reaffirmed readiness to work in coordination to have win- win partnership.
The Deputy Prime Minister further stressed Ethiopia’s significant role in the maintenance of regional peace and security and expressed the EU’s commitment to working with Ethiopia to support continued peace and security through strengthened cooperation. H.E. Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, met with H.E. Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria in Brussels on 20 May 2025.
The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing relations between Ethiopia and Austria, built on mutual respect and shared values in diplomacy and multilateralism. Both sides acknowledged their historical ties and their role in peacekeeping and international affairs.
H.E. Dr. Gedion raised concerns over EU visa restriction measure and the potential impact of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on smallholder farmers.
H.E. Beate on her side expressed readiness to engage on both issues constructively.
The Ministers agreed to deepen economic, cultural and development cooperation and to continue dialogue on shared priorities.
