A two-day regional conference on “Delivering the Global Compact on Refugees: Local Approaches to Inclusion,” opened in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa today, October 31, 2019.
The conference has brought together representatives and stakeholders from the East Africa region, including Ethiopia’s Minister of Peace, Muferiat Kamil, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Dr. Vera Songwe and Danish Ambassador to Ethiopia, Karin Poulsen.
The aim of the conference is to share experiences and identify opportunities to achieve the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, with a focus on local approaches to the inclusion of refugees within their host communities.
The Conference is organized by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Peace, in partnership with the Danish Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), ahead of the Global Refugee Forum, scheduled to take place on 17-18 December in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Geneva Forum is the first gathering at the Ministerial level to follow up on the practical implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees, affirmed at the UN in New York in December 2018.
The aim of the two-day event is to accelerate actions by governments, the private sector, international organisations, the non-governmental sector, and civil society in implementing the new Global Compact on Refugees.
