Ethiopians in Belgium celebrate Meskel

Ethiopians and nationals of Ethiopian descent celebrated Meskel in Brussels, Belgium on the 1st of October 2022.
In honor of the occasion, Ethiopian Ambassador to Benelux countries and the EU institutions, H.E. Hirut Zemene lighted up the Demera (bonfire) with the congregation of members of the Ethiopian community and invited guests.

Meskel is an intangible heritage that has been listed by UNESCO as a way to remember the true cross’s discovery. The true cross on which Jesus was crucified is discovered on the national holiday observed by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. This religious and cultural festival is held on September 27 (Mesekerem 17, according to the Ethiopian calendar).
