Ethiopia participates in World Trade Expo 2019 at WTC Mumbai

Ethiopian Consulate in Mumbai is participating in much awaited mega event World Trade Expo (WTE) 2019. The two days mega event kicked off at World Trade Center on 13th November, 2019 with much fanfare. It would continue till 14th November 2019. This expo will promote business, investment and tourism opportunities of Ethiopia. The Expo will feature an exhibition, business-to-business meetings and country presentations.

World Trade Expo 2019 will create new avenues for MSMEs, women entrepreneurs and start-ups to explore and interact with a view to tap the vast unexplored markets and seek potential buyers and collaborators.

It may be noted that WTE 2019 provides a platform to meet, connect and explore investment opportunities from representatives of 30 countries, 50+ foreign business houses with operations in India and MSMEs from five Indian States.

His Excellency, Demeke Atnafu Ambulo, Consul General of Ethiopia in Mumbai said “Ethiopia is a Land of Origin and have numerous things to offer to the world. We have a plethora of opportunities for everyone. In this expo we want to promote business, investment and tourism opportunities in Ethiopia. There are many business people have established their business in Ethiopia and year after tourist flow from India is increasing gradually. I am optimistic that this expo would further offer new opportunities in every filed”.

In WTE, participating countries will have key trade officials from Embassies, Consulates and Trade Offices to present on Trade and Investment Opportunities in their countries, while foreign business houses will showcase how they were able to integrate MSMEs into global value chains. MSMEs will display their products and services which are export ready. The Expo is open to business enterprises from all prominent sectors in Manufacturing, Agri & Food Processing as well as Services.

Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Georgia, Indonesia, Italy, Iran, Malaysia, Mauritius, Poland, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda and USA. Besides foreign countries, five Indian states would also participate in the expo. These states include Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Odisha.

Ethiopia, USAID launch $63m five-year project to expand health information system

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) have launched a new five-year USAID Digital Health Project to further strengthen Ethiopian health systems.

The $63 million project will expand health information systems in Ethiopia, train end-users in the health sector to utilize these systems, and also involve youth and tech organizations to leverage their expertise in supporting the health system.

USAID Mission Director Sean Jones and Ethiopia’s Minister of Health Dr. Amir Aman inaugurated the project at a ceremony held in the Hilton Hotel today in the presence of development partners and other invited guests.

Sean Joneson on the occasion said that the project would help improve quality of care across the country.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr Amir Aman, said his Ministry had worked to ensure information revolution for the past four years in areas of digitization, enhancing data use culture, and strengthening governance structure.

Hence, the Ministry “ is able to cover all regions, zones, woredas, and 78% of health centers with high-speed broadband internet, the full roll-out of an electronic data collection system, huge gap narrowing  between routine data and survey results, and robust governance structure,” he said on Twitter.

FM Gedu holds talks with his Czech counterpar

Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gedu Andargachew held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic,Tomas Petricek on bilateral and global issues.

Gedu on the occasion said Czech could use Ethiopia, the seat of the African Union (AU), as a gateway to Africa. He also briefed the ongoing political and economic reforms in Ethiopia.

Stating that Ethiopia is keen to strengthen its economic relations with Czech, Gedu urged Petricek to encourage investors from his country to invest in Ethiopia.

Petricek for his part commended the reforms in Ethiopia and congratulated Prime Minister for winning the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

Ethiopia is one of the two African countries chosen by the Czech Republic to forage strategic partnership, he said, further expressing his country’s desire to cement its relation with Ethiopia in all fields.

He further said the two countries have potential areas of cooperation in the education, agriculture and transport sectors.

Petricek finally invited his Ethiopian counterpart to visit Czech so as to further strengthen the relations between the two countries.

Former Ethiopia’s FM Dr Workneh appointed as Executive Secretary of IGAD

Dr Workneh formally assumed the position yesterday, replacing the outgoing Executive Secretary Ambassador Engineer Mahboub Maalim.

In a related development, Dr Workneh also held talks with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti on various issues.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister meets with U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs

 Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew held talks with Tibor Nagy, Assistant Secretary for U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs, in Washington yesterday.

The two sides discussed U.S. support for Ethiopia’s historic political and economic reforms.

They further highlighted Ethiopia’s important role in advancing peace and security in the region.

Gedu traveled to the United States last Monday to attend a meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) hosted by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the President of the World Bank Group.

During the meeting Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have reached a consensus to continue the trilateral technical discussions on the dam.

Diplomatic corps briefed on MEDEMER

Ambassadors of various countries and representatives of international agencies attended the briefing held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs meeting hall.

According to the office of the Prime Minister, MEDEMER is an idea that seeks to address the deficit in a new social, political, economic and foreign relations orientation.

MEDEMER encourages working together for a shared vision towards a mutually beneficial goal.

It builds on past successes while striving to correct mistakes in the effort to create a “more harmonious union.”

Conference on delivering global compact on refugees opens in Addis Ababa

A two-day regional conference on “Delivering the Global Compact on Refugees: Local Approaches to Inclusion,” opened in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa today, October 31, 2019.

The conference has brought together representatives and stakeholders from the East Africa region, including Ethiopia’s Minister of Peace, Muferiat Kamil, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Dr. Vera Songwe and Danish Ambassador to Ethiopia, Karin Poulsen.

The aim of the conference is to share experiences and identify opportunities to achieve the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, with a focus on local approaches to the inclusion of refugees within their host communities.

The Conference is organized by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Peace, in partnership with the Danish Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), ahead of the Global Refugee Forum, scheduled to take place on 17-18 December in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Geneva Forum is the first gathering at the Ministerial level to follow up on the practical implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees, affirmed at the UN in New York in December 2018.

The aim of the two-day event is to accelerate actions by governments, the private sector, international organisations, the non-governmental sector, and civil society in implementing the new Global Compact on Refugees.

መግለጫውን የሰጡት የመ/ቤቱ ዋና ቃል አቀባይ አቶ ነብያት ጌታቸው እንደገለጹት እ.ኤ.አ ከኦክቶበር 17 ቀን 2019 ጀምሮ በሊባኖስ መዲና እንዲሁም በተለያዩ ከተሞች እየተካሄደ በሚገኘው ሰላማዊ ሰልፍ በዚያው የሚኖሩ ከ400 ሺ በላይ ኢትዮጵያውያንን ደህንነት ለማስጠበቅ በትኩረት እየተሰራ እንደሚገኝ ገልጸዋል፡፡ እስካሁን ባለው መረጃ በዜጎቻችን ላይ የደረሰ ምንም አይነት ጉዳት የለም ያሉ ሲሆን ቤይሩት የሚገኘው የኢፌዲሪ ቆንስላ ጽህፈት ቤት በአሁን ሰዓት በማህበራዊ ሚዲያ (በፌስ ቡክ፣ በድህረ ገጹ ወዘተ) ሁኔታውን አስመልክቶ ዜጎች ከቤት እንዳይወጡ፣ የሰልፉ ተባባሪ እንዳይሆኑ መልዕክት በማስተላለፍ ስልክ መስመሩን ክፍት አድሮጎ በመጠባበቅ ላይ እንደሚገኝ አስታውሰዋል፡፡

እንዲሁም በጂቡቲ ታጁራና ኦቦክ የስደተኞች መጠለያ የሚገኙ ኢትዮጵያዊያንን ጤንነታቸውና ክብራቸውን ተጠብቆ ወደ አገራቸው በፍቃደኝነት እንዲመለሱ በጂቡቲ የኢ.ፌ.ዲ.ሪ ኤምባሲ ከጂቡቲ መንግስት፣ ከክልል መስተዳድሮቹና እና በጂቡቲ ዓለም-አቀፉ የስደተኞች ድርጅት ጋር በጥምረት እየሰራ መሆኑን ለሚዲያ አካላት አብራርተዋል፡፡ በህገ-ወጥ አዘዋዋሪዎች ተታለው ሳዑዲ-አረቢያን መዳረሻቸው ለማድረግ ጂቡቲን አልፈው የመንን ለማቋረጥ ከሚሞክሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን መካከል ባሳለፍነው ሩብ ዓመት ብቻ (ከሐምሌ-መስከረም) 1221 የሚሆኑ ፈቃደኛ ኢትዮጵያውያን ወደ አገራቸው እንዲመለሱ ማድረግ መቻሉንም አቶ ነብያት ገልጸዋል።
ደቡብ ሱዳንን በተመለከተ እ.ኤ.አ ህዳር 12 ቀን 2019 ይመሰረታል ተብሎ በሚጠበቀው የሽግግር መንግስት ዙሪያ በፈራሚ ሀይሎቹ መካከል የሃሰባ ልዩነቶች እንዳሉ አንስተው የኢጋድ አባል ሃገራት ተሰብስበው በጉዳዩ ዙሪያ የጋራ አቋም እንደሚይዙ ይጠበቃል ብለዋል፡፡
በታላቁ የኢትዮጵያ ህዳሴ ግድብ ዙሪያ በሩሲያ/ሶቺ/ በተደረገዉ ውይይት መሰረት የቴክኒክ ዉይይት እንደሚቀጥል ገልጸው በቅርቡ በዋሽንግተን የሚካሄደው የውጭ ጉዳይ ሚኒስትሮች ስብሰባ የድርድር ሳይሆን ዉይይት ለማካሄድ ያቀደ መሆኑን አስምረውበታል፡፡ ከታላቁ ህዳሴ ግድብ ግንባታ ጋር በተያያዘ ፍተኛ የመንግስት ባለሥልጣናት ወደ ተለያዩ ሀገራት መልዕክት ይዞ በመጓዝ የኢትዮጵያን አቋም በሚገባ ለማስረዳት የሚያስችሉ እንቅስቃሴዎች እየተካሄዱ መሆኑንም ግልጽ አድርገዋል፡፡
የኢኮኖሚ ዲፕሎማሲን በተመለከተ አገራችን ከጣሊያን እና ከፈረንሳይ ጋር ያላትን ዘርፈ ብዙ ግንኙነት ወደ ላቀ ደረጃ ለማሳደግ እንዲረዳና ከሀገራቱ ጋር ያለውን የቢዝነስ ግንኙነት ለማጠናከር በሮም፣ በሚላንና በፓሪስ በኢ.ፌ.ዲ.ሪ ምክትል ጠቅላይ ሚኒስትር በክቡር አቶ ደመቀ መኮንን የተመራ የልኡካን ቡድን የተሳተፈባቸው ሁለት ፎረሞች እ.ኤ.አ ከኦክቶበር 16 -21 /2019 መካሄዳቸውን ጠቅሰዋል፡፡ በፎረሞቹ ከየሀገራቱ የተወጣጡ ባለሀብቶች መታደማቸውንና በአገራችን እየተካሄደ ባለው ለውጥ ዙሪያ በጣሊያንና በፈረንሳይ ኩባንያዎች በኩል አዎንታዊ አስተሳሰብ እንዲጎለብት ማድረግ መቻሉንም አስታውሰዋል፡፡
በመጨረሻም አቶ ነብያት ከጋዜጠኞቹ ለተነሱ ጥያቄዎች ማብራሪያና ምላሽ ሰጥተዋል።

UN Peacekeeping chief reaffirms commitment to support Ethiopia’s peace building efforts

Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedu Andargachew, received Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations at his office today.

The two sides discussed ways to boost cooperation on peacekeeping operation in the Horn of Africa region as well as exchanged views on current regional peace and stability.

Recalling the long-standing partnership existed between Ethiopia and the United Nations (UN), the Gedu extended its appreciation to the organization for its efforts to bring peace in Africa and the region.

As an IGAD Chair, Ethiopia is playing a leading role to maintain peace in the region, he said, citing the mediation role it had played for the establishment of a transitional government in Sudan as a case in point.

Ethiopia is working closely with the transitional government of Sudan and other pertinent bodies to bring durable peace and development, the Foreign Minister said.

Ethiopia is also providing all the necessary support for the peace and stability of South Sudan, he said, further calling the United Nation to provide support for Africa’s youngest nation.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix for his part commended Ethiopia’s peacebuilding efforts in the region as well as its leading role in UN peacekeeping mission.

He appreciated Ethiopia’s peace deal with Eritrea and mediation role in bringing peace in Sudan. He is hopeful that Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to bring peace in South Sudan will bear fruit.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix also assured Gedu of UN’s continued support to Ethiopia’s ongoing peacebuilding efforts.

House discharging responsibilities to make 2020 Ethiopia’s general elections free, democratic: Speaker

He briefed them on activities of the House, especially about the reform it has been undertaking since last year to better respond to demands of the people, build strong democratic institutions and modernize the parliament.

The Speaker added that the parliament is discharging its responsibility to make the 2020 Ethiopia’s general election free, fairs and democratic.

Tagesse Chaffo expressed his hope that representatives of new political parties will join the parliament after the election.

Tomas Tobe, member of the European Parliament and head of the delegation, said the visit is aimed discussing ways to further boost the inter-parliamentary relations between Ethiopia and the European Union (EU).

Members of the delegation reaffirmed their commitment to support the ongoing reform programs in the country and the upcoming general elections.

The delegation yesterday met with Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew to discuss the ongoing inclusive reform in Ethiopia and ways to bolster the strategic ties between the EU and the Horn of African nation.

The delegation also met with Chief Administrator of Somali regional state, Mustefe Mohammed, in Jigjiga this morning.
