H.E. Ambassador Willem van de Voorde conveyed Belgium’s enthusiasm for the African Climate Summit scheduled to be held in Ethiopia, September 2025. The Special Envoy also highlighted the dedication of his country to advocate on issues of climate and environmental concerns. Noting that participation in the summit aligns with the global call and the commitment of Ethiopia and Belgium. Belgium aims to be a key partner in driving systemic change, utilizing its climate expertise in policy discussions. The Special Envoy also explained Belgium’s candidacy to host the secretariat of the BBNJ Treaty.
Ambassador Eshete on his part warmly welcomed the Envoy and underlined the importance of working together on the preparation of the African Climate Summit. He emphasized the need for global collaboration on climate and environmental issues. He also noted Ethiopia’s commitment to a green economy through significant investment in renewable energy and the flagship Green Legacy Initiative. Expressing appreciation for Belgium’s potential support, he agreed to exchange views on the work ahead.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun and the Embassy Desk Officer have participated in the meeting that deliberated on the Netherland Africa Strategy, which outlines a ten-year vision for the period of 2023-2032 to enhance mutual interests between African states, promoting trade and economic cooperation, with the Netherlands. The key priorities of the star are highlighted as trade and economic partnerships, ensuring stability and security, and addressing challeges related to irregular migration.

At the opening of the meeting H.E. Mrs. Reinette Klever, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of the Netherlands expressed commitments of the Government of the Netherlands to strengthen its partnership with African states interms of working together for mutual benefits. Her Excellency underscored that the Strategy’s focus areas are food security, water management and health. The Minister further highlighted the implementation of the strategy emphasize an approach of that is transformational.

Ambassador Eshete stated the close cooperation between Ethiopia and the Netherlands, also indicating the importance of general objectives and the resources requirements during implementation phases of the strategy. He noted how the strategy would interface with the EU Global Getaway Initiatives, the unintended impacts of European Deforestation Free Regulation on Africa’s foreign trade. He also expressed disappointment and the negative impacts of the unreasonable visa restriction measures. The African Ambassadors accredited to the Netherlands have participated in the meeting and underlined their countries commitment for successful win-win cooperation. Representatives of the government of The Netherlands provided clarifications questions and comments raised by African Ambassadors.

Mr. Kerkhof presented Vandewiele’s interest to work and invest in Ethiopia. He expressed wishes to partner with local businesses from the textile sector. As part of the reform program being undertaken, Addis Chamber is taking bold measures to boost partnership on the basis of mutual interest and cooperation.
The extension of such endeavors are reflected in recent period when president, board of directors and senior management of Addis Chamber presumes discussions aims at bolstering mutual cooperation.
In a latest move, President of Addis Chamber, Mrs. Zehara Mohammed, warmly received Belgian Ambassador to Ethiopia to her office, H.E Annelies MG Verstichel Brussel.
In their discussion president of Addis Chamber Mrs. Zehara Mohammed applauds the commitment of Belgian Ambassador and her endeavor to enhancing strategic ties and partnership between the Belgian Embassy and Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce to promote trade and investment between businesses of the two nations.
During their meeting Mrs. Zehara also said, “Our Chamber is keen to solidify collaboration and unlock new opportunities for growth, trade, and investment, and will be working closely with the embassy to enhance business-to-business relations and explore the diverse opportunities both countries offer”.
Expressing her delight to meet Chambers high profile officials, Belgian Ambassador to Ethiopia H.E Annelies MG Verstichel Brussel, underscores the interests of Belgian businesses to trade on textile, health sector, such as pharmaceuticals, medical waste management and recycling.
H.E Annelies MG also disclosed about the upcoming trade mission event that is expected to be hosted in June this year to bring Belgian businesses to Ethiopia and urged local businesses to make use of such opportunities for better future.
Such mutual cooperation unfolding between the two will also address the challenge of access to business information, cooperating to host/ support the upcoming B2B/ Belgium Business mission/, capacity building, sharing, exchanging, and disseminating business and investment opportunity platforms and information to Addis Chamber members to support informed decision-making.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun has addressed the African, Caribbean and Pacific Working Party (ACP WP) as organized by the president of the Council of the European Union.

H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun has addressed the African, Caribbean and Pacific Working Party (ACP WP) as organized by the president of the Council of the European Union.
The Working Party examined the European Union support program designed to enhance resilience across Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. During the event, the EU’s support through the Decentralized Disaster Risk Management (DDRM) program for Ethiopia was presented by the Representatives of the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA).
Ambassador Eshete expressed gratitude to the EU for its partnership commitment in this program and others. He also presented details of the Ethiopian government’s efforts in Disaster Risk Management, Humanitarian Response Coordination, Conflict Mediation, and Peacebuilding initiatives.
He emphasized the need to strengthen the partnership between Ethiopia and the European Union, especially within the framework of the Global Gateway Initiative that allows mutual benefit and a tool to transit from aid to development and business.
Ambassador Eshete responded to various questions raised by the Representatives of EU Member States regarding the program and future cooperation’s. The context of implementation of the Samoa Agreement was underlined by Representatives of EU Member States.

Deputy Head of Mission Ambassador Shamebo Fitamo expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two countries. During the meeting, Mr. Mampaka provided insights into the Belgium Parliament’s multilingualism and expressed interest in establishing sister city relations with the Harari Region. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun expressed condolences on 23 April 2025 highlighting the resting of His Holiness Pope Francis, Head of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of the Vatican City State, at the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See in Brussels and signed the book of condolences at the presence of Archbishop Franco Coppola, Apostolic Nuncio of the Apostolic Nunciature.
Ambassador Eshete underscored the legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis as father of the poor, migrants and refugees, strong advocate of planet Earth with the God gifted climates.

Ambassador Eshete Tilahun discussed with Mr. Eric Pieffer, Managing Director of VECTURIS, a Belgian Private Railway Operator Company.
Mr. Eric highlighted the interest of VEXTURIS to work in the Ethiopian Railway Transport Sector, as the company is aware of the potential to conduct mutually beneficial business in Ethiopia.
Ambassador Eshete, on his part, informed Mr. Eric about the opening up of the Ethiopian Transport and Logistics Sector for foreign investors. He further stated about the existing demands for investments and wider aspects of the Railway Industry, just as on the rise in the Ethiopian Context.

Today, 15 April 2025, H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun and the Embassy’s business diplomacy team discussed with Mrs. Pascale DELCOMMINETTE, CEO of Wallonia Export and Investment Agency (AWEX).
Ambassador Eshete appreciated the warm welcome extended to him and his team. He then briefed the CEO and her team about the ongoing economic reforms in Ethiopia. Ambassador Eshete underscored the readiness of Ethiopia to unleash its full potential for sustainable development and prosperity. To that end, He called for an expanded exchange of business between the Wallonia Region and Ethiopia, including the Regional States.
Mrs. Pascale noted the wonderful relationship between AWEX and the Ethiopian Embassy and the need to promote stronger business fronts. She also stated that the Agency is working closely with CBL-ACP to materialize the incoming Economic Mission to Ethiopia scheduled for 1-4 June 2025.
Both sides agreed to work together, with their respective expert teams coordinating efforts for diversified economic engagement between Ethiopia and the Wallonia Region
